The ‘Empty-Nester’ Getaway: A College Parent’s Guide to SLO, SB, and SD

Applications are in, acceptance letters are starting to deploy and college decision day is right around the corner. While prospective students are likely nervous, soon-to-be college parents are too. Where will they be spending their weekends and time off for the next 4 years? They’ll soon find out!

While college towns are typically covered through the lens of cheap eats and student dive bars, there is a massive, underserved audience of parents looking for a different experience. Below I’ve put together a Parents’ Guide to Southern California’s college hubs. We’ve curated the best places to eat, sleep, and play in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and San Diego, specifically tailored for parents to turn campus visits into relaxing mini-vacations.

Santa Barbara

UCSB, SBCC, Westmont College

Sending your baby off to college is never easy, but it helps when they’re headed to the American Riviera. Whether your kid is becoming a UCSB Gaucho, Santa Barbara Community College Vaquera, or a Westmont College Warrior, move-in day and campus visits can easily turn into a charming, sun-soaked getaway. The quaint Central Coast town offers relaxed coastal energy, endless attractions, eclectic boutiques, a vibrant dining scene, and its own notable wine country, the Santa Ynez Valley.

Stay:

Settle in at the coastal-chic Kimpton Canary Hotel, located in the town’s lively arts district and just minutes walk away from the town’s hot spots. The hotel balances chic city hotel vibes with classic Spanish-style architecture, embodying quintessential Santa Barbara character. Lounge around the Canary’s rooftop pool (the largest in Santa Barbara) with stunning 360 views of the Pacific Ocean and mountains in the distance, plus exclusive amenities, including complimentary evening social hour featuring local wines, rooftop yoga, pet-friendly accommodations and more.

Drink and Dine:

Enjoy dinner at the restaurant’s signature hotel, Finch & Fork, with farm-to-table dishes that reflect the bounty of the Central Coast’s farms, ranches and the Pacific Ocean, complemented by a world-class wine list and a playful, seasonally inspired cocktail program. Oceanside is a well-positioned home base, with easy rail access via the Coaster for stress-free trips into downtown San Diego and a relaxed coastal setting that feels like a getaway in its own right. Think walkable beach paths, a revitalized downtown, and a dining scene that punches well above its surf-town reputation.
